Happy National Zipper Day and Giveaway!

So today, April 29, is the Centennial Anniversary of the Zipper!  It was established because a Swedish-born scientist Gideon Sundback was issued a patented for his "hookless Fastner" on April 29, 1913.

Here are some fun Zipper Facts:

The U.S. Army was one of the first users of the zipper, applying them to a variety of uniform parts and gear.

Yoshida Kogyo Kabushibibaisha is the world's largest zipper manufacturer. You are likely to see "YKK" engraved on many of your own zippers.

The world's longest zipper can be found at the hotel in Fort Lauderdale's Executive Airport. It measures 6,000 feet long and was commissioned as a publicity stunt for the hotel's nightclub, "Zippers."

So to recognize National Zipper Day for our readers, we are having a give away: 4 awesome zippers!!!  To enter just leave a comment telling us about your favorite zipper project.  A winner will be drawn and announced on the end of Friday (May 3rd) Our Giveaway is now closed and the winner has been notified. Thanks to everyone who played along!

  2. Well, this is fun! I wouldn't have known it was zipper day. I love the 4 you are giving away. My favorite project is the ear buds holder from Dog Under My Desk. My daughter made one for me for Christmas and then taught me how to make them. I made 5 of them! Thanks!

  3. I'm not sure that I have a favorite project to use zippers for, the only thing I've ever done with them is pouches, so I can't compare them to anything else! Someday maybe I'll try one on some clothes! Thanks for the fun giveaway.

  4. Well, it might be a little boring, but my favorite is a plain ol zipper on a dress.

  5. Oi! I've never actually made anything with a zipper in it... I would love to make a zippered wallet for myself though :)

  6. I have made many pouches, but at the top of my "To Do" list is a baby sleep bag also known as a grow bag. Keeps the baby warm so you don't have to worry about them kicking off their blanket. Thanks for the give-away!

  9. The things you learn! Thanks for the zipper trivia - I will share it with my sewing friends! My current favorite zipper project is a clutch purse. I made a couple for a friend and myself, and now all my sisters want one, so I will be making three more soon. I'd definitely like to put those zippers to use!

  10. I must admit... zippers intimidate me. I am afraid of putting them on anything so I usually don't. :-( I think I just need to practice.

  12. Zippers are not my favorite, but someone I know loves zippers. I remember one project I made took a four foot zipper. That wasn't fun. Although they aren't my favorite thing, I'm glad they were invented.

  13. I love putting zippers in baby sleepers. A lot of them in the stores use snaps. Have the people who designed them ever tried to change a diaper at 2AM in the dark without their glasses and try to snap that darn thing back up? I doubt it. Zippers are much easier.

  14. I'm embarrassed to admit that I've only sewn one zipper in my whole life, and it terrified me. I'm about to make some zippered pouches, though, and I'm hoping to overcome my fear. Fun giveaway!

  15. I haven't tried to sew a zipper since high school in the 1970s but I would like to try again and use them in a purse or a pillow back.
    Thanks!
