English Paper Piecing Class: Hexies

I have scheduled my first class for 2014, Hexagon paper piecing, or English paper piecing.
This is a great beginner project and an opportunity to try something new. Maybe you will get hooked, like me.

We will be making an embellished dish towel with 2 sizes of hexie flowers.


Cost: $20, includes the dish towel and paper hexies

Time: February 10, 6-8 PM

Bring:
-cream thread (for hand sewing the hexies and the bobbin for the towel). You can use a different color for machine top stitching the hexies, if you want

-needle for hand piecing the hexies

-14  2.5" fabric squares for hexie flowers

-sewing machine, scissors, small pins

Hexie Placemat Tutorial

Are you on Instagram? Heather and I are addicted. Its a free app on your phone and if you haven't checked it out yet you should. We follow many wonderful quilters and I was recently inspired by @elnorac. She embellished placemats with hexies. You know I just had to jump on board.

This was an easy an quick project. I created a design board for the shop and here are a few pics of the process

I laid out paper hexies  (I used 1" papers) on my placemat to determine how many would fit. I had leftover jelly roll ends and cut them to 2.5" squares

Sew up your hexies using your favorite method

Sew them end to end as long as is needed for your placemat

Take out the paper, iron flat, and pin the strip to the side of the placemat. Sew close to the edge all the way around the sides.

Voila, placemats! I am wanting to make some Christmas mats now, this was such a fun project.

Dining Room Curtains

I have been in my house for a little over 5 years and I finally put curtains up in the dining room. I live in the country so I don't have many people peering in and watching us eat but it was time.

I had been scouring the thrift shops for month but no luck. I could have bought new curtains but I love a challenge. I found curtains that were almost long enough for $3 per panel and looked brand new. I added a bottom strip to each one and I really like how it turned out. I used Chicopee by Denyse Schmidt.

Once I finally kill the flowers on the bench I think I should make some pillows to sit there. What do you think?

 I had the bunting up as the only curtain decoration for years. I used vintage dish cloth, ticking, and cutter bark cloth curtains. I added some buttons and doilies. The metal letter tags spell out our last name.

Hemma Zipper Bucket Totes

Heather whipped up these adorable zipper totes. The pattern is Ingrid Convertible Canister Pattern by Hemma Designs

I can think of so many uses for these. And for kids too. They would love to zip and unzip the handles

Happy New Year and New Hexies

As soon as I finished my hexie quilt I started another. I am addicted.

I  moved on to double flowers and this time I used scraps. I had a goal of 35, then 48, and now I am making 63 (I believe I have 49 made). I have ordered a Bridal Bouquet paper piecing set and I can't wait to get started.

Hexie Quilt Particulars
-made using mini charms from Moda. They are the perfect size (2.5") and I didn't trim them.
-I used about 20 packs and 3 packs of paper pieces. I have reused them many times and they have held up well
-I sewed the hexie flowers right on to a cream square and then joined the squares
-started in March and finished the top in November

Today is about taking down our Christmas window.  Now I have to think about a January up to February window. I am drawing a bit of a blank. Anyone local have any ideas and want to help me? I miss my window partner Laura.

Speaking of Laura, she will be giving me photography lessons. I got a new camera for Christmas and I am over my head. I did take a few shots of my ornaments to practice before packing it all up.
