Heather is teaching Simply Charming Mini Quilts classes from the book of the same name.
Classes will be the last Thursday of the month 6-8 PM, 12 quilts in 12 months.
You can use up your scraps or use a fat eighth pack like Heather did (several mini quilts can be made from one pack).
Each class is 5$ with the purchase of the book, Simply Charming Mini Quilts.
The fabrics shown are from the Walk in the Park line

Amy is teaching an apron class Tuesday April 10, 1-3 PM.
Fee will be 10$ plus supplies. The Amy apron pattern is being used.
Amy used Urban Cowgirls fabrics for this apron.

Lori is teaching an apron class as well.
This class is Saturday February 4, 11-12:30 PM.
Fee is 10$ plus supplies.
Lori will be using the Lori Apron pattern (How do I get a Tara apron pattern?).

Kaleidoscope Quilt

Its done! Its done. The Cluck Cluck Sew Kaleidoscope quilt is all quilted up.

I used Sandi Henderson's Secret Garden.

I am thinking this lovely needs some pillowcases to go with it.

Amy is making a quilt with this fabric too (but used white as the background). It is so cute and looks so different than this one. I love seeing the same fabric used in different patterns. It gives it a whole other perspective.

Paper Airplane Quilt

I saw this picture on Pinterest (it led me here as the source) and I fell in love. I was making a Sara Jane, Children at Play, Pinwheel Quilt and I knew I was going to have left overs so on the 'to do list' it went.
I used City Weekend by Oliver and S for the paper plane. I just eyeballed a fat quarter and used a pencil to sketch right on the fabric. I cut it out, spray basted it on the background white and blanket edge stitched it with my sewing machine.
I have some light blue perle cotton and I am going to sew on the loopy dashes behind the plane like in the inspiration photo.
Thanks to Jenele for free motion quilting it for me on the long arm! Such perfect little loops.

Oliver + S Pumpkin Seed Quilt

I never tire of Oliver + S' City Weekend. The colors all work together so well.

We used a cotton batting (to give it a crinkly vintage feel after being washed), a small stipple, and I used a Pumpkin Seed pattern.
I really like how, depending on how you look at the pattern, you can see either a four leaf flower or a circle. Now to pick the binding. Blue?

Beginning Quilting Class

Beginning Quilting Class- The 2 Charm Pack Quilt

who: ages 8-13 with an adult or 14+ solo
when: February 20+27 and March 5: 6:00-8:00

We will be making a crib size quilt top and learning how to quilt it on our sewing machines and bind it. Some homework may be required.

New Favorite

Jenele picked out, kited and sewed up the latest table runner from the Calendar Table Runners pattern (12 runners in one pattern).

She brought in the cutest pillowcase to display until she gives it and other goodies to their new owner. I am loving the polka dots. So bright and cheery.

And now for something a little self indulgent. My newest favorite fabric (and Lori's), Urban Cowgirl.

I am thinking of using this pattern

or this one.

What do you think?
And now for weather...is it just Kimberly, Idaho or is anyone else not getting winter? Seriously, my fruit trees are going to blossom.

Fabric Just In

We got some new cut goods in this week. First is A Stitch in Color. The top piece of the stack is a whole cloth and I am envisioning this settee I have recovered in this and in The Quilt Barn window.I just have to wait for the bolts to arrive.

Next is Urban Cowgirl by Urban Chicks. I am loving the muted colors of this line. A layer cake is coming home with me. I cant wait to see what yardage Heather ordered.
Both of these lines have free patterns up at Moda and I am printing them out. Love Fabric Friday!!

One Down, Kaleidoscope Quilt

I came to realize that I have many more unfinished items that I thought. Monday I decided to really put my nose to the grind stone and get some things done.
One Cluck Cluck Sew Kaleidoscope quilt top in Secret Garden, done. Now to add it to the be quilted pile.
I almost don't want to show you a picture of the quilt top. Quilts look so much nicer all quilted up and bound. Once it is all done up pretty I will have it here at The Quilt Barn for you to take a peek at.

I also have picked out another of her patterns for my new favorite fabric lines. Cause what I need is a new project. All sarcasm aside, I will be sharing this new fabric love (and one of Lori's too) on Friday.

Moda Rep Visit

One of the many perks in working at at fabric store is visiting with the Sales reps. I was lucky to sit with Heather and our Moda Rep on Friday. She brings out great big brochures and fabric samples and Heather puts little tiny clothes pegs on the ones she want to order. We also try and think of store samples ideas while we are at it and makes lots of notes.
Bonnie and Camille's latest line, Metro caught our eye. Those pinks really appeal to me (being, I suppose, the mother of 3 little girls). These got clothes pegged.

We also got to peek at Aneela Hoey's Christmas line, Cherry Christmas, out next summer.

Some of these are coming our way plus layer cakes.
I am putting together a beginning quilting classes and using her Little Apples fabric as my sample. I still cant get enough Aneela.

Monday Projects

The first thing I do when I come to work is walk out front to say hello to Jenele and see what new projects have been brought in.
Now that Christmas is over and we can go back to making store samples. Above is a bag Lori made from one of our most popular patterns, My Favorite Bag. She used Grand Bazaar by Michael Miller.

Lori also made this adorable table topper. The pattern is Town House and the fabric is Hometown, both by Sweetwater.
I got my sewing machine back from the repair and I am ready to get sewing again! Hopefully I will have something to share this week.

Friday Favorites

Have I mentioned that I love opening the big boxes when UPS comes? Maybe? Today I found this book, Zakka Style. One copy. One. I didnt think it fair that I snipe this before it even makes it to the front so I am going to wait.
The projects in here are so stinkin cute. Look at those fabric boxes!
We got in a few other books too so come in and check them out and I promise to give you a chance at the Zakka book and then its mine!

Sewing Resolutions

I have been reading a lot of 2011 Blog Recaps the last few days and seeing what other quilters and sewers made last year. I would love to mock up some photos of what I have worked on but it may not happen for a few weeks. Four days into 2012 and I am already behind.
Right before Christmas Day my sewing machine decided it had had enough. I have been machine-less since. It is in the shop and I am feeling itchy. Itchy to sew! If the damage is really big I will buy a Janome from The Quilt Barn. This girl has got to sew!
What are your sewing resolutions? I have a pile of UFO's (unfinished Objects) that I would love to finish up and Jenele, Lori and I have the 'wool bug' and are looking into wool hand projects. Do you wool applique and what companies do you like for patterns?
Several of my UFO's are going to be store samples so I need to really get those ones finished. I am using these patterns:
Cluck Cluck Sew's Kaleidoscope
Tula Pink's Love Quilt and Crown Jewels with her Prince Charming Line
I have also cut into my Walk in the Woods fat eighths stack. I am using Lecien's free pattern, A Dash of Sugar

A Walk in the Woods Quilt

Hello all, did you make it through the Holidays? I had to get one more project in and I really wanted to use the new charm packs we have in by Aneela Hooey, A Walk in the Woods. Love this one.

I wanted to come up with something quick and easy. I used the whole charm pack, minus 2 squares, and some grey yardage. I will post the instructions soon. And thanks to Amy for getting it on the long arm and quilting it up for me.

I couldnt wait for the yardage to come so I used the puppies from her Sherbet Pips line. Too Cute. The binding is the scarfs from the same line. Perfect for binding.

And, so exciting, The Quilt Barn took out a big ad in the Irish Quilting magazine for the launch of our new web store. We are still on etsy but now we have a big giant online store. I have spent the last month adding items to it and we have over 1100 listings! I also stared putting on our older fabrics so if you are looking for something that is now out of print, check it out. We may have what you are looking for.
We would love your feedback too. We have big plans for the site and still tweaking the pictures and links. We are at The Quilt Barn.

Fabric Friday

I love it when I can do a Fabric Friday post! I get giddy when a big Moda box is delivered. When I pulled out a fat quarter bundle from Aneela Hoey, A Walk in the Woods, I skipped around. Then I skipped over to Jenele because I knew she would be as excited as I was.
I am thinking one of the fat quarter bundles is coming home with me. We have lots of charm packs too and I put them on etsy.
I am thinking of a double dresden block with this line. And just for fun, look at this quilt. Its on my to do list.

Ooh Sweetwater, you never disappoint.

And Cosmo Crickets, I love you too. But I had never heard of this line. I had to look you up.
My quilty mind is spinning. Not like I don't have a lot of projects on the go but I really want to start cutting up that fat quarter bundle.

Butter Tarts Recipe

I have a recipe for you today. I am originally from Canada (Victoria, BC) and these tarts are from my mom who makes them every year at this time. They are very easy to make and very sweet.

VELVET BUTTER TARTS

1 cup raisins (I use the golden raisins)

2 tablespoons butter

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup brown sugar

1 egg well beaten

Package of frozen tarts in tinfoil cups (or circles cut from pie dough and pressed into muffin tins)

Pour boiling water to cover the raisins, let stand 10 min.

Drain and- immediately add the butter, vanilla, brown sugar and beaten egg. Stir until all mixed and sugar is melted

This is important because the hot raisins melts the butter and brown sugar

Pour into raw tart shells no more that half full

I put these on a cookie sheet

Bake 425 for 12-15 minute

I couldn't find the premade tart shells here so I bought a box of 2 premade pie dough rolls and cut out large circles with a glass and lightly pressed the dough into ungreased muffins tins. This recipe makes about 12 tarts.

Pointsettia PIllow

I have been seeing Pottery Barn's Poinsetta Pillow all over the internet. It is really chic but it is no longer available. I'm sure the price would have been not in the budget either.

I decided on the spot I needed to make one. I had the pillow form, backing and front fabric, and left over white felted wool from another project. I took pictures along the way from both of these tutorials and wouldnt you know, my daughter deleted them. Groan.

It isnt very hard to make this pillow though. I cut out 3 different size petals from the white wool. I arranged them on the front on the pillow fabric (already cut to fit my pillow plus seam allowances) to play around with the arrangement.
I then sewed the petals on starting an inch from the tip of the petal down to the base. I didnt sew a straight line but meandered a bit.
For the center I tacked on 3 wool circles. Sew the front and back of the pillow together, right sides together, and sew the opening closed after turning right sides out and inserting the pillow.
The petals can be fluffed up a bit by lifting the edges.

Stockings a la Jenele

Jenele brought in 5 stockings she made this week and I quickly snapped a picture before they disappear to a fireplace mantle.
I love the row of bells down the side of the cuff.

Love ruffles, of course. The stripped hanger is a cute touch too.

Jenele used a sheet of Colorfast Sew-In Inkjet Fabric Sheets by June Tailor for the initials. I am thinking it would be cute for an advent calendar next year. I am already planning one so I can get it done on time. 11 months should be right.

We are planning a Christmas sweater day (of 2 or 3) here at The Quilt Barn. I searched high and low (4 thrift stores) and nary a sweater. Or vest. I was hoping for a kitten in a stocking. That lit up. And played music. And maybe a few hanging ornaments. I think Christmas sweaters are a hot item for parties so I may be too late. Maybe I should make one. Yah, I'll just whip one up.

New Curly Scarf Class Announced

Heather just announced another Marina, curly scarf, class. Come in Tuesday 13th at 11:00 and learn how to make this quick and cute scarf. A great project for any level of knitter.

Come in to The Quilt Barn, pay the class fee (10$) and buy the Marina yarn (a 5.99 skein will make one scarf) and you are set.

Quilt Alongs

I wanted to tell you about a couple of sew alongs that are starting up soon. If you are looking for a fun new quilt pattern then check these out. I am thinking of making the Oh, My Stars quilt. The good thing about a quilt along? No deadline. You can start and finished anytime.

And the pictures? Random Christmas cuteness from out windows.
How is everyone doing on their handmade gifts for Christmas? Panicking yet? I think I am doing ok. I have a stack of half finished stuff that I should tend to before I forget about it and a couple of quilts that I am going to quilt on the long arm this weekend.

Monogram Gift Tag Tutorial

I showed you these tag lovlies last week and said I would have a tutorial for you.
In a pinch (like I was) and need a gift tag? Or not in a pinch. These are so quick to whip up and you can pilfer from your scraps.

You will need scraps of fabric for:
the white background
the backing fabric
the monogram and the hanger
and
a scrap of batting

Optional
Spray Baste

Cut the backing, white front, and batting approx 5x5". Using spray baste layer the 3 pieces like a quilt sandwich.
Free hand cut out the letter you are wanting (seriously, it's not that hard). Spray baste that on the front of the square sandwich.
Sew close to the outer edge of the letter securing it in place.
Quilt a few, random lines across the square sandwich.
Trim to the desired size. This one ended up being 4x4"
Using your tag scrap fold over the long edge and iron (see the red piece to the left in the pic above). The hanger is approx 5" long and finished 1/2" wide. Sew a line down the open side and trim

Loop the hanger and pin to the back. Sew a few times across the hanger to secure it.

Voila. Now go make 20 for your closest and dearest friends and family. Or just make a few, like I did.

Fabric Baskets

I have made several things this week to take to my Guild Christmas party this weekend. Since I am swapping with a fellow guild member I am holding myself to high standards. This basket is project #5 and I think its the keeper. I used the free tutorial and pattern at Pink Penguin. Along the right hand side of her blog are more great tutorials. Many of them on my "someday when I need a distraction from my real projects" list.

This is the first basket but my liner didn't sit well. It would bother me so I made another.
The great thing about this project is that is uses 2x2" scraps so I can finally use my favorite bits. There are some fabrics I cannot get rid of no matter how small.

Swoon Table Topper

Swoon is one of my favorite patterns. One block is quite large, 24" I think. Each block uses 2 contrasting fat quarters and some background fabric.
These two fabrics are also a favorite and since the are only available as fat quarters here I had to buy some for this project. I love how it looks like a wreath.

And stop the presses! Is the Snowlady with the cat eye glasses and head scarf not the greatest! I see a little of myself in her. I have been chomping at the bit to use this fabric somehow and it made an appearance as the topper's backing. I have to use this again somehow. Not sure though. Any ideas?

Voile Infinity Scarf Tutorial

I cant believe I am showing you a picture of my neck. But there you have it. I bet the scarf is so awesome you didnt even notice?
We carry a few bolts of voile and I had always wanted to make something with it but didnt know what. Then I started seeing infinity scarfs all over blogland and a light bulb went off, I can make that!

You are going to need 2 9" strip cuts of two different voile fabrics.

With the right sides together sew a 1/4 inch seam down each long side. Turn right side out and iron seams flat.
On one end (see above picture) turn the bottom 1/2" inch in to the middle and iron.

Tuck the raw edge end of the scarf into the folded edge 1" and sew the two edges together.
I am wearing this scarf today and I wrapped it twice around my neck and fluffed it up a bit. Voila, voile! A quick and money wise gift.
Before sewing the ends together you can try out the length and see if it works or if you need to shorten it.

An aside, how do you say voile? We are split here. Some say it so it rhymes with 'oil' and other so it rhymes with 'wall'. Its so I cant even remember how I used to say it before.

I will leave the scarf here until Christmas if you want to take a look at it.

Grinch Advent Calendar

I saw this tutorial a few days ago and had to make one. I am easily distracted from the things that I should really be working on.
Look at the little grin. I can hear the song "you're a mean one, Mr Grinch" in my head everytime I look at him.

This tutorial is on The Fat Quarterly Blog. We love their on line magazine too.
I did'nt have time to embroider the numbers on the pockets so I cut the circles from a Countdown to Christmas fat quarter.
The Grinch moves ahead a pocket everyday until Christmas. He is the perfect size for little hands.
The number circles have inspired my for next year's advent calendar. That I will actually finish on time. Probably, if I dont get distracted.

Canning Jar Gift Idea

Jenele brought in another gift idea to share with us. She is so clever.
The back story: Jenele's 83 year old step father told her a few years ago that he didnt like 'serious' gifts. That would certainly give me pause. But not Jenele.
Her father in law loves to can and this not serious canning themed gift is perfect.
She picked up a flat of 12 "quilted" canning jars, paper and ribbon, and had a blast picking out 12 different fun things to put in the jars.

Using canning stickers she wrote short little riddles in the top of each jar so he could guess what was inside. Some of the goodies were chocolate covered almonds, Goldfish crackers, and 2 little stuffed mice for their cats.
I think this is such a great idea. Way to go Jenele!
Jenele says this would also be a great 12 Days of Christmas or Advent Countdown idea.

Fabric Gift Tag

At the end of Novemeber every year I rush to get my Holiday gifts in the mail if I want my family in Canada to get them in time for Christmas. Tuesday for the big day. I was quite pleased with my wrapping paper find, buttons! (although my daughter thought they were pig noses).
However, I didnt have any tags. Shoot.
So, I made some.

I love it when I have an idea, execute it and it actually works out like I imagined. I am going to be posting the quick and easy tutorial on how to make these yourself.

Fairy Tale Sailboats

The Sailboat Quilt is finally finished and hanging in the store.
As soon as I saw the free pattern on Moda Bakeshop I knew I had to make this quilt. Oliver & S' fabric line City Weekend was perfect for it. The border fabric looks like waves.
I am a big fan of the designer of the pattern, Penny, from Sew Take a Hike. Thanks to Penny for another great paper piecing project.

Her paper pieced pop bottles are on my To Sew List.

We liked this quilt so much we made some kits for you. For those of you who tell us there arent enough boy quilts...this one is for you.

Jenele was at it again, a super cute project to share with us this week. The Scotty Dog uses one charm pack. The pattern is a bonus project on Denyse Schmidt's Stacking the Odds quilt pattern

There was even enough left over from the one charm pack to make a couple of pot holders.

Have you ever had a load of projects and a deadline but managed to find a new project that distracted you? Just me? I have a Christmas gift list a mile long to work on but decided on a whim to crank out 9 Magic Burrito Pillowcases on Saturday. I think I am going to make 3 more. Why not.

Quilt Sample Sale...Part 2

The first 2 days of our First Annual Sample Sale was a crazy success. Thanks to so many of you for coming out and buying our quilts. Its all we can talk about.

Seuss Pillowcases

Lori brought in her Seuss pillowcases this week. She made 12 in all.

This line has been wildly popular. Lori used the 'magic burrito method' when making her pillowcases. It can be found here. She highly recommends this technique.

I love the polka dots on the edge of this pillowcase. And the little yellow band. Nice touch don't you think?
Its been a pretty good week for blogging. With all of us here gearing up for the holidays there will be lots to share with you.

Secret Garden Apron

Lori brought in one of her finished projects, The Lori Apron. How cute to have an apron pattern with your name. Apparently there is also an Amy apron and a Judy apron.
She used Secret Garden for the main part of the apron. Such a cute line.
I am slowly making headway with the Kaleidoscope Quilt using this line. Anyone else make anything with Secret Garden? I want to see!

Watermelon Days

May I present "Watermelon Days" (trumpets sounding).
Heather found this pattern and fell in love with it. So did a few other Barn Chics. Heather, Lori and Amy each made up one of these quilts and now we have kits available for you too.
This lovely watermelon quilt was sewn up by Amy and it is hanging in The Quilt Barn if you want to check it out.
Our Halloween/Fall windows are being dismantled and slowly Christmas decorations are being brought out. Some special projects are being made up this week as we speak to spice up the windows. Themes have been discussed and we are getting excited. Window dressing is really fun. We pool all our treasures together and come up with something really great.

Winky Stars

Monday's are a great day because sometimes Barn Chics will bring in finished projects. Today it was Jenele (Lori has some projects that she is bringing in this week too!).
Jenele got to play around with the long arm and free motion quilted up this cute little wonky start quilt. I typed 'winky' first. Maybe for the coming season it should be winky. Sounds Christmassy.
She really put in the effort and quilted each block and center. Me, I just do a loopy edge to edge. Jenele is an 'attention to detail' quilter.
This quilt is for The Magic Valley Modern Quilt Guild's Quilts for The Community Drive. They are hoping for 50 this year.

Mini Quilts!

Today is Mini Quilt Day over at Amylouwho. Its a link party so go on over and check out all the mini quilts that bloggers are showing off.
I am sharing a mini dress quilt I made from a kit I bought at The Quilt Barn years ago. It was my first mini quilt.

I have another kit for this (different fabrics) but I have since lost the pattern. That poor little kit. Someday.

A did a demo at The Modern Quilt Guild on mug rugs and this is what i made up to show the members what a mug rug could look like. I have since decided that it is a hot coco and cookies rug for one of my daughters.

Fabric Friday

Its Fabric Friday! Heather is so excited about a new line that just came in, Soleil Denim by Michaeil Miller.

I am thinking that nautical, beachy colors are going to be big next year and this fits right in. Now, for pattern inspiration. Any thoughts?

This one really appeals to me. I bet it would make cute pillows. So chic.

Heather has been meeting with the fabric reps this week, fresh back from Quilt Market in Houston. She has been ordering up a storm. I'm itching to know what she ordered.
I do know that she is going to be ordering the whole Flea Market Fancy Line. Denyse Schmidt is reprinting a limited Flea Market Fancy collection for January 2012, and a whole new collection of prints for FreeSpirit in Spring 2012.
And a book! We are titching in anticipation already.

Scarves and Mittens

Do you knit? I do not. I wish I did. I once thought I could teach myself to knit (cause I taught myself to quilt). I thought I would start by teaching myself socks. Stop laughing.
Heather made this scarf using Rozetti Marina yarn. Its crazy cute!

Here is another scarf in the work. Can you see how the yarn pulls apart to the right? I've been told it is super easy.

A couple of the Barn Chicks stocked up on these colorful yummies to make for Christmas presents. One scarf costs 5.99!

Maybe if I can't teach myself to knit I can teach myself to make mittens. These (made by our knitting Queen Judy) fit me perfectly. I need to make 2 pairs for each of my girls and 2 pair for me. Thats 8 pairs of mittens. No problem.

Christmas Deadline and a Show-n-Tell

First, if you are wanting a quilt quilted for a Christmas deadline it needs to be here at The Quilt Barn by November 15. Any quilts dropped off after that may not get done by Christmas!!

Now the Show-n-Tell. A bunch of us made pincushion frames last night. It was so much fun. The Bead shop next door made up cute little kits so we could make our own pins too.
The sweet birdie pincushion was made by Jenele.

This one is a present so I am not going to say who made it. But isnt the Morocan theme great!

Beginning Quilting Class

We have been getting lots of requests for a Beginner's Quilting Class. We now have one coming up!
November 1, 8, 15 and 22 (Tuesdays) from 6:00-8:00 PM.
A supply list is available when you sign up. The cost is 45$, not including your supplies.

We can supply you with a sewing machine if needed. Just let us know when you sign up so we can have it set up and ready to go.

There are a few people signed up already. The supply list is now available for you to pick up.

We will be making a lap quilt. Our sample top is made and I will show you pictures when it is finished being quilted.

Pincushion Frame Class

As soon as we saw Kristy's super cute picture frame pincushion we knew you would love it too. Come on, this is adorable.

I would love to make these as gifts for Christmas.

You can learn how to make on too. Kristy will be teaching you how to make one.

Here is what you will need:

1- really cute picture frame
It needs to be complete though with glass, back and everything.

2-coordinating fabric (it depends on how big the frame is but unless you're using a 8x10 frame a fat quarter would be plenty. It really just needs to be 2-4" larger than the frame on all sides)

3- scrap of Poly-fill same size as the fabric

4- Hot glue and hot glue gun

Simple Home Project- Dishtowels

Happy Monday! What a week we had here at The Quilt Barn. The sale kept us all busy and flying around the store.

But now it is time to get back to our usual: blogging about the stuff we love and have made.
I am on project #4 (I think) from the book Simple Home, dishtowels.

I had been meaning to go shopping and buy some plain dishtowels and embellish with their method but other things distracted me (as is easily done). Then I spied dishtowels on a roll. What!!?? How can you work somewhere and not notice something? Lets be honest, that happens all the time to me. I will be cutting some fabric and never have seen it.

So, I cut a couple of lengths of the dishtowel on a roll, gathered scraps and ruffled ric rac and got to work. Voila, fancy dishtowels.

Sneak Peak

Does anyone use Instagram on their smart phone? I do and it has become by go to camera. I am not even sure where my camera is.

I took this picture of a store sample I am making this morning. The top looks a little lumpy. It is laid out on my bed. Also known as my design wall.

I love Sarah Jane's fabric line, Children at Play, and knew pinwheels had to be featured somehow. I searched for patterns that would fit but I came up short. Whats a girl to do? Make up a pattern. Why not?

I dont have a little boy but I could'nt resist the Rocket Making Club fabric. It reminds me of Dick and Jane. So retro and fun. Someone have a boy baby so I can give ths to you.

I kept adding and sewing and came up with something I think will work. I have it sandwiched and ready to be quilted. I am going to use my home machine for this one. I am putting together an free motion class and will take notes as I quilt this one.

So, what do you think so far? I'm not sure how long it will take to quilt but I am hoping to show it early next week.

Sewing Summit Recap

This last weekend was the inagural Sewing Summit. A sewing and blogging conference for the modern sewist. Or, get to meet all your bloggy friends and the women behind the awesome blogs you follow. And get a bunch of free stuff. Check out our swag bags. It was like Christmas and Halloween!

One of the high lights of the trip was taking a free motion quilting class taught by Allison of Cluck Cluck Sew. You might know her from her visually delish blog and her patterns. She gave lots of great tips and really demystified quilting on your home machine. What would you think about The Quilt Barn teaching a free motion quilting class?

She had several of her own quilts on display and of course I had to take a closer look and and a secret picture. This is her Kaleidoscope pattern. I am cutting out the pieces for this one right now using Joel Dewberry's Heirloom collection.

Did I mention I was going to be a picture dork? I might have. This is me trying to look hip with my name tag.
We should all go next year. We could book a whole wing of The Little America and decorate our doors with bunting. We would make fabric name tags and participate in fat quarter, charm square and zippered pouches swaps.
We would take classes from women whose blogs we follow, and win lots of door prizes.
We would sew into the wee hours of the night in the sewing room (machines provided). Or we could go to sleep around 10 cause we are just so tired. Yah, I'm a sewing party animal.
We would eat amazing food, meet awesome people and walk around Salt Lake City and see the sights.
So, what do you think? This time next year?

Creative Monday

This sure has been a popular bag pattern. Between Heather and I we have made 3. The pattern came from the book by Moda, Fresh fabric Treats, and the fabric is Sweetwater's Hometown line.

Sweetwater's Hometown line is one of my favorites this year. The jelly rolls sold out fast! We got in The Neighborhood Pattern today too. Did you see Judi's quilt that she made hanging in the store? So cute.

This one was made with another of myfavorite lines (and no, not every line is my favorite. I do have a few faves though), Joel Dewberry's Heirloom.

I struggled with a pattern for Heirloom. I finally found one I loved, Cluck Cluck Sew's Kaleidoscope. What do you think?

I got to meet Allison from Cluck Cluck sew this last weekend at Sewing Summit in Salt Lake City. She was so sweet. I am going to be posting a little recap of the trip tomorrow so come back and see what it was about. They announced it will be happening again next year! I highly recommend it.

Hen House Retreat

Welcome to The Hen House Retreat. We are located at The Quilt barn in Kimberly, Idaho in a historic downtown building.

On the main level you will find roomy workspaces, ironing stations, cutting stations, fantastic lighting and ergonomic, deluxe sewing chairs with lumbar support.

In our sewing area there are 4 design walls, 4 ironing stations, and a large screen TV.

In our cutting room you can have access to our professional size Accuquilt Die Cut machine and die templates.

Custom mini and project classes can be arranged.

We will soon have a Gammill Quilting machine that can be part of your retreat as well.

The apartment has been graciously remodeled. Included are a full kitchen, dining and living areas, full bath, and sleeps 6 comfortably.

Each bed is made up with Sweetwater's Hometown line.

Attached to The Hen House Retreat is The Quilt Barn, over 6000 square feet of sewing, quilting and knitting treasures.

Many our the patterns we carry have been made into quilts for your inspiration.

We carry many knitting and crochet items and can create custom classes for you.

Simple Home Project- Tote bag

Do you ever start a project but then get side tracked by another? Even if you really should stick with the first one? No, its just me?
Here is my side track project, the third project from Simple Home. I went with The Tote Bag.
The fabric wasnt hard to pick. I had my eye on this home dec fabric, Momo, for a while (it may be destined for cushions later too).
And a doily. Big surprise. But it looks kinda cute by the owl right?

The pattern was super easy and fast. When my girls see it they will all want one and that will be doable with this pattern. I did modify it a bit and quilt the outside pieces with some quilting batting first, to give it a bit of stability.
I'll leave it here at The Quilt Barn for a bit so you can see what I did. Check out the lining fabric too, super cute.

And why not get even more distracted with another project. I needed a card holder so I made up a pattern. KZ and 2 other ladies and I are going to Salt Lake City this weekend for The Sewing Summit and I needed something to carry my cards.
I will make this up into a tutorial for you when I get back. It would be good for loyalty cards too.
When the case is closed its a little boring. What can I do to jazz it up a bit?

KZ (our wonderful illustrator. She did the drawing of us girls up there) and I are super excited about going to Salt Lake City this weekend to attend The Sewing Summit, a modern sewing, blogging, social media event and classes.

I figured out where I was going wrong with my Courthouse Steps tutorial. I used a different machine the second day so all my blocks were off. That miniscule 1/4 inch difference added up. Now to unpick all the squares and use my first machine. Ya'll forgive me right?

Simple Home Projects- Placemats

Today I was supposed to show you Part 2 of The Courthouse Steps Tutorial.
Sewing, writing, and photographing that tutorial is kicking my seat.
While I work on that I will show you the placemats I made from the Simple Home Book. Remember the potholders I made? This is the second project. I am hoping to make most of the projects from this book.

Tada, the scalloped edge placemats. I like the fabric in the book better. I was going for fallish fabrics for mine. One down, 5 to go.

Last year I made these placemats (reversible). They are like a mini quilt that I sandwiched, quilted and bound. They have held up really well.

Which project should I do next? I am liking the quicker ones. The tote bag? The apron? Choices, choices.
And the rest of the Couthouse Steps tutorial? I will have that finished up for you this week.

Couthouse Steps Tutorial

Happy Friday!
Today is the last project of our Fall Bedroom Tutorials. It is going to be a 2 parter. On Monday I will show you the second half.

The bed runner is made using using 12 Couthouse Steps blocks. It is kind of like a log cabin block.

Supplies
fabric. For the Queen size bed runner I cut 2-2 inch strips from 13 different fabrics
center block fabric: 1 strip cut into 12- 2" blocks
usual sewing items

For this turorial I am using different fabrics than shown in the bed runner. My center square is the solid green (on the orange bed runner it is grey).

For each block you will be using a center 2" square and 4 different fabrics.
For the first block pick 2 different fabrics and cut 1-2" square from each.
Sew these to opposite sides of your center square.
Iron open away from the center.

Chose two new fabric strips and sew to each opposite side. I dont cut my strips from here on. After I have sewn on the strips I trim them. This saves having to cut a bunch of pieces.

Iron open. You have finished your first round (picture above show 2 rounds). You will be sewing on 3 rounds of strips.
Continue sewing on strips in the order of the first round.
If you have directional fabric be sure to sew them on in the same direction.

This is what the finished block looks like after the three strip rounds are sewn on.

For the next block you will need to match the sides from the adjoining block.
Sew the block in the same way and using 3 different fabrics plus the one matching the side. The above 3 side by side blocks share the green and pumpkin fabrics.

For the first row make 6 blocks. Be sure to space out your fabrics.
On Monday I will show you how to make the second row. This row will require a bit more planning.

String Block Pillow

Its Day 3 of The Fall Bedroom Projects Week. Today I am showing you how to make the string block pillow.

Do you save your selvedges? Last fall I got it into my head to cut off all the Halloween and fall selvedges from my stash fabrics. That left me with a big bag of strings. A whole quilt sounded daunting so I settled on a pillow. I love quick projects.

Supplies:
strings (selvedges from fabric. I leave 1" to 2" of printed fabric showing when I cut them)
4 phone book pages cut to 8.5 inch blocks
backing fabric 18.5" square
border fabric 2- 2" strips
18 inch pillow form
usual sewing items

1. start by laying a long string down the middle of the paper. Tuck another string under the white edge of the first one.

2. sew down the first string close to the edge.

3. continue sewing on strings down the right hand side

4. when one side is done start on the left hand side of the block lapping the strings as you sew them on.

5. when the block is full flip it over and use the paper as your guide and trim the block.

6. rip the paper off the block. Make 4 blocks

7. join two blocks together as shown. make 2 sets

7. sew the two sets together as shown.

8. add the border strips to all four sides using a 1/4 inch seam

9. with right sides together and using a 1/4 inch seam sew around the string block front and backing leaving a wide opening on one side. Trim the corners to reduce the bulk

10. turn the pillow right side out poking out corners. Insert pillow and whip stitch the opening closed.

11. Enjoy the pillow! I may start trimming all my Christmas stash now too.

Halloween Bunting Tutorial

Today is Day 2 of The Fall Bedroom Tutorial Week. Today's tutorial is for the bunting, or flags, that are draped on the headboard. You can see the full room reveal here

The one I made uses different fabrics than the one in the window but the same vintage trim.

I dug out my Ghastlies stash for this project. This is one of my favorite lines and I was so glad to see it re-released with new designs this year.

Supplies:
Fabrics of choice including the backing fabric
cardboard (I used a cereal box) or template plastic
trim for hanging the flags from (I also like to use the twill tape that comes with the layer cakes)
usual sewing items

This is how I came up with my triangle shape template. I decided I wanted the top of the flag to be 7 inched wide. I made marks at the 0 and 7 line. I also made a mark in the middle at the 3.5 mark.
I drew a line down from the 3 marks to how long I wanted the flag to be. I drew a line from the 0 mark down to the middle mark on the bottom and then the same for the other side.
A perfect triangle.

On either the back or the front trace the template on to the fabric, minding any directional print. I didnt want any upside down pumpkins. Do the same for the backing fabric.
I made 8 flags but you can make yours any size.

Take a front and a back fabric and place right sides together. Sew 1/4 inch all around leaving 3 inches along the top open for turning.
Clip the corners to reduce bulk.

Turn right side out, poke the corners out and iron flat. I like to off set the seam and iron first. This makes a crisper edge.

Edge stitch around the flag making sure to catch the open edge on the top.
Sometimes it can be hard to start sewing on the corners. When I get to the corner I pull out some thread and use this to pull my piece from behind to get it going past the feed dogs. Trim these after.

Lay out all the finished flags and decide on an arrangement.

Lay out the trim at this time too and measure out how long it needs to be. Sew on the trim attaching each flag.

Done!

Fabric Pumpkin Tutorial

Hi, welcome to the first tutorial from our Fall Bedroom Window. If you didnt see The Quilt Barn's Fall window take a peek here. All week we will be showing you how you can make these projects.

First up are he fabric covered pumpkins. I was inspired by the latest issue of Country Living. They used paper but I thought why not fabric.

What you will need:
funkins (fake pumpkins)
Modge Podge
sponge applicator
scissors (not your good ones)
fat quarters
drop cloth
disposable container (for the modge podge. I used a large yogurt tub)

1. ge t your pumpkin ready. Take off any stickers or tags. Lay out the drop cloth and pour some modge podge in the tub. Cut your fabric into strips. I made mine about 2 inches wide.

2.Using the foam brush coat an area of the pumpkin top to bottom slightly wider than the fabric stip.
Use your fingers smooth the first strip over the modge podge getting it into the pumpkin grooves.

3. Go over the strip with more modge podge smoothing down the edges. Continue by repeating step 2 and 3, slightly overlapping the strips. Trim the tops of the strips if needed at an angle as you curve around the stem

4. The modge podge will dry clear but be sure not to leave any large drips.

5. Dry overnight. You can embellish it further by painting the stem or tying something around the top, like raffia or a ruffle.

I love Modge Podge and have so many ideas using it with fabric.

Fall Bedroom Projects

I'ts hard to believe it is Fall already. Last week it was in the 90's. I'm ready to bring out my sweaters, bake some pumpkin muffins and drink cider. I might put those things on hold until the weather cools off. In the mean time I wanted to get into Fall gear. I love fall the best out of all 4 seasons.

Lori and I were discussing the windows at The Quilt Barn and we came up with 2, if I do say so, great ideas (the second idea will be posted later this week or next and I am super excited about it too).
The black cheater quilt turned out so great we knew it needed to go on the bed. Black is so chic and a great fall color, I think. It needed a pop of color and nothing is more fall than orange. I would have loved to have made a queen size quilt for my bed but time was not on my side.

Along the top of the iron bed is a bunting flag using fabric and vintage ric rac.

I struggled with what pattern to use for the bed runner. The fabric was easy. I just went around the store and pulled every orange bolt. Not all made the cut and I ended up with 13 different half yard cuts.
I ended up making up a Courthouse Steps as the pattern and added a squares strip around the outside. What do you think?

I have a soft spot for these crocheted lovelies. If I can think of a way to use them every season or occasion I do. And I did this time. I bought some orange liquid dye (not easy to find in a BSU loving town) and had plans of dying a doily as a pumpkin. I ended up finding an orange one so the dye got put aside for another project. I might add a little green wool stem.
The fabric pumpkin is a project idea taken from some Country Living inspiration.

The pillow was made out of Halloween and Fall selvege and pieced using a paper pieced string block method.
We have a few more ideas for this window but I wanted to show you what we had done today.

Jenele's Love Quilt

I just had to show you Jenele's Love Quilt.Is'nt it stunning?

Jenele was inspired by Tonya Ricucci's quilt, Rumspringa. Her blog is Lazy Gal Quilting. The link to the inspiration quilt is here.
Jenele didnt have a pattern to work with so she just winged it. Three cheers for winging it Jenele!
We have since got in Tonya's book Word Play Quilts and made up a solids packet so you can play around too.

I had to show you the back. Its a great quilt in itself.
Jenele quilted this one her home machine eye balling the lines as she went.

Wear it Thursday

Happy Thursday! I like Thursday's cause its all about making clothes. This week I am sharing clothing for kids again but next week I am hoping to have an adult piece to show.
I love Oliver & S patterns. They are so classic and sweet. I have the Jump Rope Dress in my sewing queue.

There's the pattern, down there in the bottom. The paper doll covers are a great idea.
This jacket's exterior and interior is made out of flannel.

Paper Pieced Sailboats

As soon as I saw this free pattern at Moda Bakeshop I knew I had to make it. I even knew right away what fabric would be great for it, Oliver and S, City Weekend.
I had tried paper piecing a bit before and this part of the quilt (the boat) was very simple piceing. Great if you are just trying it for the first time. The sails are raw edge applique and will look a bit ruffly after washing.

The border fabric looks like blue waves and was perfect. I have one more border to do and then it can be quilted on the long arm. I am debating an all over wave pattern or a sailboat pattern. What do you think?

Simple Home Project

When Moda was hereI had a peek at this book, Sweetwater's Simple Home, and I knew I had to make something from it.

Just the cover with the quilts on a shabby white chair in a field caught my attention. I knew I wanted to use Anna Marie Horner's LouLouThi. I like this fabric line even more now. I am sure I will end up using it again.

Instead of using batting scraps I wanted to try the Insul Bright. I knew I would be giving these as a gift and I didnt want them to get burned. This stuff will prevent that.

The back of one of them. The butterflies are cute but not too cutesy.

I had some scraps leftover and made them into a little square potholder.

I want to make everything from this book, even the office chair cover. I know what project I am doing next. Come back next Monday and I will share it with you.

Cup Cozy Tutorial

Its Saturday and that means its time for this week's tutorial. I thought I would start out easy in writing my first tutorial. If you have any questions or suggestions please let me know.

Today's tutorial is a cup cozy. I'm not a big coffee fan but I do love hot drinks, especially in the fall and winter. Those darn cups can get hot and I have the need to cute everything up.

What you will need:
a cardboard cup sleeve. Mark one side 1 and the other side 2. This is important.
a hair elastic (or narrow garment elastic)
a button
a scrap of fleece
the front and back fabrics
embellishment (optional)
sewing machine and sewing kit

1. open up the cardboard sleeve and on the back of one fabric trace side one of the sleeve. On the second fabric flip the sleeve and trace side two. Trace any side of the sleeve on the fleece.

2. cut out the fabric patterns 1/4 inch from your traced line. Cut the sleeve pattern on the line (this reduces bulk)

If you are adding embellishments (I added a premade ruffle the length of the sleeve) sew it on now.

3. layer your 3 pieces as follows; right sides together of your fabrics, the fleece on top of the wrong side of the the top fabric.

4. on one end slip in the hair elastic in between the two fabrics. Pinch the elastic and use a pin to hold it into place

5. pin all layers together and sew a quarter inch seam all the way around leaving a 2 inch opening along one side for turning.

6. Turn your sleeve right sides out and poke out your corners. Iron the sleeve flat tucking in your opening edges.

7. edge stitch around the whole sleeve making sure to catch the folded in edges of the opening.

8. you can now quilt the sleeve for added dimension or leave it as is.

9. try it on an empty cup and use a pin to mark a place for the button on the edge opposite the elastic and sew on the button

Of couse I had to make one out of Joel Dewberry's new line, Heriloom. I am still looking for just the right pattern for that fabric line.

I am thinking of making a bunch of these as gifts and adding a hot chocolate or apple cider packet, maybe a cute spoon. They are so quick to make and are a good way to use up those batting scraps.

New Retreat Mural

I have to say that I am really impressed by this mural. The letters look like they are carved into the building.

Friday Favorites-Jenele

Today the lovely and talented Jenele is sharing with us some of her Quilt Barn favorites. Jenele is truely the Queen of quilting. If you have a quilting question she will have the answer.
When I asked her about some of her favorites she immediatly went to Moda's Countdown to Christmas. Her favorite is the second from the top so save her some. I told her to buy it while its here cause this stuff is popular.

We have some projects made from this line in the store.

Jenele has become a big fan of solids, especially shot cottons. She says they are soft and really nice to work with. This quilt, which she calls Shot Cotton, uses Kaffe and shot cottons. She used a pattern in issue 5 of The Fat Quarterly.
Have you see the other quilt she made recently? It is hanging by this one in the store. It is made of all solids. Its hard to describe but is stunning. I will call it the Love Quilt. She is putting together a kit of the solids and the book it came from.

These beauties showed up today. She tipped the yellow one on its side and became a whole different pillow for me. Love it.

These pillows are from the book A Touch of Whimsey... and Jenele used Anna Marie Horner and Joel Dewberry fabrics. Did I mention I love these pillows?

I asked Jenele what upcoming fabric line she is excited about and its Little Apples from Aneela Hooey. I heard that it shipped yesterday. Woot! Heather gave me a fat eighths bundle from Quilt Market and I made 2 little quilts from it. I need backings!! Did you see them at the Moda Event?

Speaking of the Moda Event, we got in more of the book, Fresh Fabric Treats. This book was a hit and Heather will be using it for the Moda Bakeshop Club so get your copy.

Wear It Thursday

I am loving this little outfit. With 3 girls I might have to make a bunch of these. Maybe a set with Joel Dewberry's new line, Hierloom (it's my new fave).

This is the pattern. The dress is super cute too. Instead of the pants in the pattern a ruffle was added to the bottom of a pair of capri jeans.
With Fall I think a sweet little cardigan and crochet beanie would be cute. OK, I have talked myself into making at least 3 sets.

WIP Wednesday

I am about 90% finished my Nine Dots quilt. I have a wee bit of the binding left but I had to share this super cute quilt pattern with you.
It is a free pattern from Henry Glass. The fabric, Nine Dot is by him too.

I had some leftovers so I incorporated it into the backing and made a larger pianio key border along the bottom.

I am digging the all over pebble quilting that Amy picked for me. I am sure I will be picking the pebble quilting again. I took a picture of it with the fabric line I used. What do you think?

Spa Day for Sewists

Today at the Moda Event we debuted our Spa Day for Sewists. You will spend a relaxing day at the Hen House making this adorable tote bag from the new Moda Bakeshop book, Fresh Fabric Treats. Heather is teaching the class and will answer all your quaestions and provide tips and tricks.
Bring an extra project if you get done early and sew the day away.

The Spa Day is Friday September 23rd 4:00-10:00 OR Saturday Spetember 24th 10:00 am-4:00PM
Meals, snacks and the supply list are included (not included are the materials)
The cost is $39. Space is limited so sign up soon.

The other event we are excited about is our Sewing Marathon. Spend the day at the Hen House making project after project with one jelly roll. Projects include a ruched table runner, from the Fresh Fabric Treats book, a string block hot pad, Christmas stocking, fabric flowers and more.

Amalie Apron

You can never have too many aprons. Right? Right.

I like this one so much, the Amalie Pattern, that I have plans for another.

It is displayed by the apron patterns for the weekend. It looks like a cute little dress on.

Starting next week Saturdays are going to be a free pattern/ tutorial posting day. Check back next week for a quick and easy tutorial. Once the new Quilt Barn web site is up and running we will be able to offer printable pdf's for you to use.

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday! We have a new Friday segment, Friday Favorites! Each Friday we will feature a different employee's favorites from The Quilt Barn.

The QB girls are busy and I didnt give them much prep time so I am going to go first.

1.What are some of your favorite things in the Quilt Barn?

So hard to pick. I am a big fan of Halloween so this year's Ghastlies is a must. I was giddy waiting for this to come out. Have you seen the quilt made out of this line that is hanging in the store? Take a look the next time you are in. I have an apron pattern that needs to be made out of this.

Another line I am crushing on is 9 Dot by Henry Glass. Heather tossed me a stack of this and a pattern to make a store sample. Love it. It is about to go on the long arm and will be up in the store next week.

The Quilt Barn now has iron on laminate. Jenele and I were just talking about this stuff and the next day there it was. It comes in matte or gloss and turns any fabric into a laminate. I know! I am thinking this bicycle fabric by Michael Miller needs to be made into a cosmetic bag or pencil case.

Heather even suggested it would be great to cover the bottom of a bag so you can wipe it clean.

2. What upcoming fabric lines are you excited about?

A sweet line by artist Sarah Jane called Children at Play. I should start thinking of how I can be the one to make the store sample. I dont think this one will last long. I'll let you know when it is in.

Hmmm...who should go next Friday? I can't wait to see what their favorites are. I'll have more questions for them too.

Sneak Peak from Fresh Fabric Treats

Monday is a big day here at The Quilt Barn. We are having a Moda Event Day with Brian Dunn of Moda. Its going to be a great day with demos, door prizes and a sneak peak at the 2012 lines. Also we will have their new book, Fresh Fabric Treats. I got to see the book yesterday and if you like Moda's Bakeshop then you are going to love this book.
Brian is going to be signing books so make sure to come in and get your copy before they are gone.

Heather and I got excited about making a few things from the book to debut with the the book on Monday. I knew right away what pattern I wanted to make and Heather knew exactly the fabric to use. They had just got the fabric in and I got to unwrap it and make myself a kit. Hot off the presses fabric.

We want to shout out a big thank you to all of you for supporting our Hen House Open House this weekend! We had a wonderful time and gave tons of tours! It made us feel so great that you are all as excited as we are for this new adventure! I thought I'd share some pictures and a little more about what's next...

Our "Hen House" logo designed by Karisa Hillman will be painted on the building in the upper left hand corner of this picture. The boarded windows below will feature darling hens she created that will perch with their crafts and welcome everyone! Didn't Windsor's Nursery do a beautiful job on our pots and hanging baskets? WOW!!! They are stunning!

This gives you a glimpse of our work room with a solid 5' x 12' work table with 16 plug-ins and plenty of circuit power for machines and personal irons. You can see the foldout ironing boards in the corners that swivel 180 degrees for added convenience. I have to say... Doug did an amazing job on our design walls - all 4 of them! Although our awesome sewing chairs didn't make it here for the open house, they are scheduled to arrive Monday and will be here in the store for you to test and review!

We were so lucky to get a trunk show from Cluck Cluck Sew to display at our open house! Allison is such a sweetheart and her blog is full of wonderful tutorials from car seat covers, to skirts, to camera straps, to fresh modern quilts... I could go on and on and on and on.... The red club chairs are perfect to sink into with your knitting or handwork!

I'm loving the cutting table that Jenele's husband Barry crafted for us! It is the perfect height and just right for several cutting mats to be in use together.

Lori decorated the apartment with rustic decor and it is just as cute as can be! With a full kitchen, you can bring your own food, or choose one of our flexible food packages.

I know it's probably too small to see in this picture, but Doug (my husband) embroidered "the hen house" on our towels! It earned him the nickname of "Jack" this weekend for being such a jack of all trades! So, if you forget his name, just call him "Jack". :-)

And last, but not least... these are the half dressed beds. I didn't get the shams done in time for the openhouse, but hey...that just means the rooms will be even cuter when you get here! Doug and Barry built these darling beadboard beds and we garnished them with solid cream quilted bedspreads and bedrunner done in a new line called Hometown by Sweetwater. It will hit the store in August, but because everyone is already in love with it, we will be taking pre-orders beginning July 1. Click the link to see the colors in all their splendor!
