Hexie Progress

I figured out what to do with the hexie flowers I was making with my mini charm packs. After I sew together the 6 color and one lighter center I remove the paper, iron flat, and sew the flower on a 7" square.

I might trim the square down at bit so the flowers are closer together. I just couldn't bring myself to making the boring spacer hexies.

I have made 90 of the 120 blocks I am planning on making (10 blocks X 12 blocks). Thats 840 hexies. Not bad. I might make it bigger. I swore no lap quilts this year (they don't cover toes).

I do know if I like the idea of borders on this to make it bigger. What do you think? 154 flowers would make it a twin (1078 hexies).

I should have been keeping track of what lines I am using. I picked up some not yet released mini charms while at Quilt Market and have used all the ones out that I like (minus the Christmas and Halloween ones).

Briar Rose by Heather Ross

We are pretty excited to finally get in Briar Rose by Heather Ross. Both Heather and I bought fat quarter bundles at Sample Spree and we have been busy working on our shop samples.
I pieced my backing today and can't wait to see it all quilted up (piecing backings are my least favorite thing to do? Anyone else?)

I cut fq bundles this morning for the shop. We have half yard bundles in the shop too

The selvages are adorable. Check out the little strawberry. I have a few more smaller Briar Rose projects I want to make. Contrast cuff pajama pants? Tote bag? Little girl's dress? All yes.

Windham has put out a free pattern to use with Briar Rose, Rainbow Quilt by Made by Rae. I would love to see this pattern made up so if someone could make it then show it to me in person that would be fab  ;)

Playing with My New Serger

Last month I finally bought a Serger. I have wanted one for years but, to be honest, I was afraid of them. It has 4 needles and they were bound to run out of thread. Then what? And then I found out you can change the feet. What!? What if I had to unpick a seam? Can you do that?

My Janome came out of the box already threaded.  Brilliant. Of course, one of the threads will run out much fast than the others. Using the very helpful color coded diagrams on the machine I successfully re-threaded it.

I have made several projects (all without reading the manual. I will. Probably) including this tank top.

And yes, you can easily pick out a mistake seam

I can't remember the pattern, sorry. If you really want to know I can dig through my sewing room for you. I used some vintage fabric, denim, and a pearl button

I haven't figured out changing my foot over to the rolled hem so I just sewed a serged edge.
Not bad.

If you are thinking about getting a serger get one. I love mine. You just have to dive in and start sewing and figure out as you go. And maybe read the manual.

We are very excited about an upcoming class, the Super Tote bag - an amazing pattern by Noodlehead. This class will be taught by the lovely Nicke of Kiss Kiss Quilt She has made many of these bags and will be a super teacher.

This tote features a zipper to keep all your treasures secure. Never done a zipper? Don't let a zipper keep you from taking this class. Its your time to tackle zippers! Trust me, they aren't as scary as you think.

This bag has lots of pockets: interior pockets, front exterior pocket

You will also learn how to make piping and pleat details
This bag would be a great diaper bag or gym bag, and everything you need bag.

Call (208-423-5092) or drop by the shop to sign up and reserve your spot.

Lucille Bag and Hello Gorgeous

We got some new patterns while at Quilt Market this past Spring and I have put one of them to use. I made The Lucille Bag by Abbey Lane.

The side ties are a cute touch, adds a bit of pop. I hung it up next to the Hello Gorgeous fabric and it looked a little flat so I stuffed it a wee bit with batting scraps. Much better.

I put a vote up on our Facebook page (The Quilt Barn, the one in Idaho) for either Hello Gorgeous or PB&J.  Thanks for voting everyone!! That was fun.

And last week Heather asked Jenele to cut low volume fat quarter bundles. We are mad for texty and low volume fabrics!

Jenele has a great eye and I love her bundles!

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July/Thursday and have a great weekend.

This Week's Flash Sale

We are still on our high from this weekend's flash sale. It was a roaring success. Took us by surprise actually.

Today I am getting bundles ready for this week's flash sale which, I think (if I can get it together) will be on Wednesday.  There is Tula Pink, Anna Maria Horner, and Urban Cowgirl. I have fq bundles and yardage. I will have them in our etsy shop

Lots of empty bolts. Any cool ideas for using these in our window display?

And our empty sale wall. It was full. Whats left will be cut into fat quarters or yardage and listed on etsy.

You can follow Heather on instagram where she will announce the sale (@thequiltbarn) and I will put a notice up on Facebook (The Quilt Barn, the one in Kimberly, Idaho).
