Vintage Quilt Thursday: Daisy Pinwheel

 Hello, its Thursday and I have a vintage quilt to share with you. Hooray!

Many of the quilts I will be sharing (and the block how tos) are from the same lady and are family quilts.

Next week I will be sharing the blocks I made with this pattern. I have a few fabric lines I think I want to use. We have some great text fabric I will be listing today on Etsy and those will be making an appearance for sure!

This quilt uses curved piecing (its not that hard, I promise) and is hand quilted. You can tell that is has been used and loved for a long time.

Heather and I have been working on the new shop (right next door). We are having lots of fun playing around with all the vintage goodies and sewing necessities.

Vintage Quilt Thursday:Tree of Life Block Tutorial: Part 2

Happy Friday and welcome to Part 2 of the Tree of Life block tutorial. If you are looking for Part1, go here.
 

 We are going to create a half square triangle with the last piece sewn in Part 1. Can you see it under the blue square? Draw a diagnonal line on the 8 3/8 blue square. Place the 2 squares, right sides together, and sew down either side of your drawn line with a 1/4" seam.

The bottom block is slightly bigger. Before cutting down the drawn line to separate your 2 pieces, trim the bottom square using the top square as a guide.

After you cut down the drawn line open the square and press open. You will have made 2 identical squares and will only need 1. The other half square triangle you can save for your next block (if you make another).

The square should measure 7.5"

Now to add the bottom of the basket. Draw a diagonal line on the 5" colored square. Place it, right sides together, on the bottom of the block lower than the block by 1/4".

Sew a line above the drawn line. Trim off the bottom of the triangle 1/4" below the drawn line and press the triangle open.

On to the tree tops. Lay out the half square triangles and the two 3" background squares as shown.

Sew the first row of hst as shown.

Attach the rows, the set of 3 hst triangles first to one side, then the 4 hst and background square row next

 Do the same for the top rows.

Vintage Quilt Thursday:Tree of Life Block Tutorial: Part 1

Welcome to Vintage Quilt Thursday. (edit, for some reason this didn't actually post and I just noticed this morning. Grrr. Sorry)

First, it almost isn't Thursday anymore. We are having some yuckiness move through our clan and today was a rest day for some of us.

Second, I can hear you thinking...but this isn't a vintage quilt.

True. I was so inspired by this previous Vintage Quilt that I wanted to remake it. I had to put my own spin on it.

I had to break this tutorial up in to 2 parts (see family yuckiness above) and I will share the copy cat I made that looks like the original at the end of that.

 I puttered about my fire hazard of a sewing room and pulled fabric from my scrap stash. Yup, that looks like my style.

You can make this super scrappy like my block or you can stick with a two color block.

You will need per block:

7- 3 3/8" colored squares
7- 3 3/8" background squares
2- 3" background squares
1- 8 3/8" background square
1- 8 3/8" colored square (basket)
1- 1.75"X12" colored rectangle (basket handle)
1-5" colored square (basket bottom_

(not in the picture below are the 2-3" background squares)

 Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of your 3 3/8" background squares 

Layer a colored square and a background square, right sides together. Sew down either side of the drawn line with a 1/4" seam. Cut down the drawn line.

Open those lovelies up and press open. Trim up and nip off the dog ears.

Your 14 half square triangles finish at 3"

Cut the 8 3/8" background square in half corner to corner.

Sew the 1.75" X 12" rectangle to either side of the two triangles. Press open.

So far so good. I will post Part 2 tomorrow. I have more fun vintage quilt block tutorials coming up for you this summer. I am having so much fun with this!

This weekend is our last Sale Weekend before we move next door and begin our new store hours:

Quilts may be dropped off by appointment for machine quilting on days we are not open.

We are holding another Instagram Destash this evening at 6PM MST.  If you have never participated in an Instagram Destash, this is how it works:

You create an Instagram account on your smart phone.  Click here for a step by step tutorial with pictures.

At 6pm, we will start posting fabric with prices and yardage.  The first person to reply with their paypal email address receives an invoice and has the opportunity to purchase the fabric.  If that person doesn't pay, the 2nd person gets it and so forth.  If the bolt has more than 6 yards, you can claim 2 yards at a time.  If I wanted 2 yards, I would comment with "2 yds please quiltbarn@gmail".

Invoices will be sent on Friday and orders will be shipped within 1 business day of payment.

Beginning Friday at 10AM through Saturday at 3PM, all discount fabric will be $3.99/yard with a 1 yard minimum cut.  If you finish the bolt, it will be $3/yd.  We still have quite a bit of civil war/primitives/shirtings and kids prints available.  We still have notions, wool, and trim at 75% off and books/patterns are 50% off.

Saturday, June 21 is the 3rd Saturday of the month.  Our new store will be open and the old space next door will be hosting a "Yard Sale" with furniture and display items as well as misc crafting items.  This will take place from 9am - 5pm.  See you soon!

Vintage Quilt Show and Tell

I think Thursdays are going to be Vintage Quilt Show and Tell.
This quilt came in to the shop with another vintage quilt top to be quilted by Amy. She showed us several of her family quilts.

This quilt is (I believe but correct me if I am wrong) a Drunkards Path block. This curved block can be arranged in many different configurations.

This is another example of a two fabric (almost 2 color) quilt. I am really appreciating the simplicity and beauty of these 2 fabric quilts.

I want to try this out and just have to find the perfect fabric.

Handmade Wedding: The Veil

Welcome to another Handmade Wedding post. This time I am talking about my veil.

Since this is my second wedding and I am over 40 I didn't want a full traditional veil. I knew a birdcage veil was perfect for me. Birdcage veils are a little vintage-y too, and you know I like vintage.

My veil was made for me by my friend (and former, missed Quilt Barn chick) Laurie. She now works for J.L. Johnson Bridals. Lucky me. We chatted a bit about what I was looking for, white with combs on the side to hold in it my hair

Laurie suggested this larger mesh tulle and it was perfect.

I don't have any pictures of me wearing it to share yet but I did post a few wedding photos on Instagram (one selfie of me driving myself to my wedding in my mini van). I am tinyglutton on Instagram.

I would be remiss if I didn't share with you my latest fabric love . I am downloading the pattern this morning and I can't wait to get started and share what I am making with it.

Civil War Destash Today!

If you follow us on Instagram, you know that last night we hosted our first Epic Destash!  We posted bolts of fabric on Instagram for $4-5/yard and the first person to comment with their paypal email address was able to purchase the bolt.  We sold over 100 bolts in about a half hour!

Today, we are holding our Civil War/Reproduction Fabric Destash.  Lots of you collect civil war prints, so we have bundled them into 4 half yard pieces for $12 - that's just $6/yard!  We did not repeat a single fabric so you can collect all the bundles you like without having duplicates!  There are also yardage pieces and bolts marked at just $5/yard.

If you have never participated in a Destash on Instagram before, here's what you need to know:

1.  If you don't have instagram, go to the App Store or Google Play on your smartphone and download the Instagram App.  It's free.  Create your account.

2.  Then, tap on the star and search for thequiltbarndestash .  Click on it and "follow us".
