Appleville T-Shirt

I got started on a few Appleville projects. I have one big one I am making but I wanted to make a few smalls too.

We are hosting an Appleville  Contest and you could win a $100 Gift Certificate to The Quilt Barn. You can use it in store, at our etsy store or on our webstore.

See this blog post for the full details. You can also win a fun prize pack just for blogging about our contest and spreading the word.

So, as a QB employee I cannot win the prize pack or the gift card but I can still play along.
I wanted to start out with something simple. I used a double faced fusible on the back of this cute bunny square and ironed it on a red t-shirt.
I usually applique something like this over a stain or tear but the litle red shirt needed some jazzing up.
I didnt machine applique it on...yet. I am thinking I should, for durability. Has anyone done anything like this and not ironed it on? Did it stay on?

Ok, go and blog about our contest please so I can send someone something fun. See the linked post for details. Also, I would love for you to participate with me. I love to see your creations.
Have a super weekend. I don't know about you but it is stinkin hot here so I am going to sew inside. Stay tuned for more Appleville fun.

Sherbet Woods Quilt, Another Radioway

The Salt Air Radioway Quilt was a hit but we sold out of the fabric. I still thought we should have a sample up with Radioway by Jay Bird Quilts. But what fabric to use?

How about a combination of Aneela Hoey's Sherbet Pips, Little Aplpes, and Walk in the Woods?

Add in new toadstool quilting and perfecto.

So, what do you think? Does grey, red, pink and teal work?

Of course when I cut myself a kit I make a few extra. You can find them at our etsy store.

Baby Hankie Quilt Tutorial

I found a stack of Moda handkerchiefs and thought they needed to be made into something. I made a  vintage hankie quilt years ago and  this little stack needed to be made into a sweet baby quilt.

If you have a few new or vintage hankies and want to make a quilt here is what you will need:

Fabric Needs

4 Hankies
Sashing- 1/3 yard
Corner Stones- 1/8 yard
Inner Border- 1/4 yard
Outer Border- 5/8 yard
Backing and Batting- 1.25 yards
Binding- 1/3 yard

Cutting Instructions

Hankies
 -trimmed to 11.5"X11.5

Sashing
-12  strips 11.5"X11.5"

Corner Stones
-9 squares 2.5"X2.5"

Inner Border
-4 strips 1.5"  width of fabric

Outer Border
-4 strips 5.5"  width of fabric

Binding
-4 strips 2.5" width of fabric

Piecing Instructions

-lay out the four hankies,  the sashing strips and corner stones as seen in the photos.
-working in horizontal rows sew the sashing and hankies together to make 2 rows.
-do the same for the 3 sashing and corner stone horizontal rows.
-attach the 3 sashing/corner stone rows to the 2 hankie rows. Again, use the photo as a guide
-sew an inner border strip to the sides of the pieced middle. Add the top and bottom inner border next
-repeat the above step for the outer border
-sandwich and quilt as desired.
-I used a cd to trace and cut rounded corners

100$ Contest with Appleville and a Giveaway

We are super excited to announce a contest featuring the Appleville Panel by Suze Ultman.
Heather and I just adore this panel and have wanted to make something with it but we are coming up blank. Heather suggested we have a contest to see what sewers and quilters could come up with.

The winner wins 100$ to spend in our etsy store or at our website!

The purchase of the 5$ panel is your entry fee. You can enter up to 2 items per panel. Want to enter more items? You can buy another panel.
The deadline is August 15. On that day we will be putting up a link party so everyone can see what projects were made (as long I can figure out how to do that by then).

Those of you who are local we would love to display your entries in The Quilt Barn.

You can buy your panel at our etsy store, at our webstore or in person at The Quilt Barn. You can also purchase the panel and coordinating fat quarter bundle here

How about another giveaway? I have bundled together fun stuff for you. I found some great fabrics that coordinate with the Appleville panel. In this stack are 6 fat quarters and one panel.

Also in your bundle is a Moda scissors pouch, Bed Runners and More book, a Clover Seam Ripper, a 4th of July pattern with a wool mini charm pack, and 10 spools of aurifil thread (all different colors).

Pretty fun giveaway bundle! All we would like you to do is blog about our Appleville contest and link back to this post. Feel free to use our pictures. We want to spread the word and see all of your lovely creations.

Leave a comment with a link to your blog posting to be entered. We will randomly draw a winner July 9 and email and announce the winner

Quilt Barn employees can participate but are not eligible for the prize.

4th of July Pillows

I'm a follower of One Pretty Thing and when I saw these pillows from Sewn Studio I had to pop over and check them out. I really wanted to make the ric rac pillow but Amy and I decided to make this one instead. I'm so glad we did. Its darling and very easy to make.

The stars are Tula Pink Prince Charming and the stripe is from Moda's Bar Harbor. I used jumbo ric rac for the trim and a tea dyed muslin I had on hand for the back.

You've heard "Go big or go home"? We went big with our bed window. Big with a July 4th theme.
I thrifted this flag fabric and amy quilted it with a stars and lops.

I made it reversable too. The stripe is a red and white ticking from Little Quilts and the stars is Honor and Glory by Windham Fabrics. This side got the quilting treatment too.
The blue rectangle is simply raw edge stitched in the corner.

As you can see it is quite a large pillow (bigger than a standard bed pillow) so I stuffed it with styrafoam beads meant for pouffs or bean bags. It was perfect for this.

After the window is changed it is going home with Amy and I told her not to use this pillow for pillow fights. I simply hand stitched the edge closed and it could burst foam beads. Not fun to clean up I'm sure.

Utah Shop Hop Part 3

We have a t-shirt printing machine in house so naturally we had to have custom shirts for our trip. This is the shirt we wore on the first day. Amy would march into every quilt store and proclaim "we are here to F.A.R.T. in your store". Heather or I would quickly explain the real meaning. The shirts were a hit. You can get one here

Saw this cutting table at My Girlfriend's Quilt Shoppe in Logan. So cute. And a great idea too.

Giant fabric spols from Pine Needles in Gardener Village. They were about 3 feet high.

Day 3 T-shirt. Kinda but not really naughty. Find them here.

I am excited to start collecting custom t-shirt for a future t-shirt quilt. Have you got any great t-shirt ideas?

Don't forget about our giveaway announcement on Saturday. You can win a $100 gift certificate to our store, etsy shop or webstore.

Utah Shop Hop- The Quilts

More of our Utah Shop Hop adventures. Today I am sharing with you quilts I took pictures of with my iphone. My camera was dead by picture #2 so it was up to the phone to help me out.

I think I squealed when I saw this quilt at Corn Wagon Quilt Co. It is a pattern by Lori Holt called grandma's Kitchen. I am making this quilt and have appliqued 4 blocks so far. I am making the easiest to hardest, or at least what I think are easy and hard blocks.

Quilt from Quilter's Haven in Bountiful. Each store gave out a sheet with a block on it and I didn't realize until I had visited about half the stores that some stores had a quilt made up with everyone's block. I love the quilt block bunting.

I saw 2 Swoon quilts. This one is from Gracie Lou's in Salem. The quilting on this is amazing. We really liked Salem and Gracie Lou's. The town had some great old buildings and the staff at Gracie Lou's was fun.

Another Lori Holt pattern. Not sure of the name of this one. I love all her fabric lines. This quilt is from Piper's Quilts in Sugar House. Isn't that a great name for a town, Sugar House? She was in a great old house too.

Lastly, is a V. and Co pattern, Houndstooth. This two tone beauty came from Material Girls in South Jordan. This is another super cute store with lots of great samples made up. You also get to see Heather's lovely pony tail in this picture.
We carry this pattern and I am thinking one of us needs to make a sample.

More Utah Shop Hop posts this week. Also, on Saturday we will be telling you how you can win a $100 gift certificate to Quilt Barn. You can use it in the store, at our etsy store or on our webstore.

Utah Shop Hop-Ghastlies

As some of you know Heather, Amy and I went on the Utah Shop Hop this weekend. I had been looking forward to this weekend since February. I saved my pennies and had a budget.
I documented our trip on twitter so you can go back and see what we got up to.

I think we visited about 20 stores in 2 days and drove from one end of Utah to the other. Not all the shops we visited were on this hop but, of course, we had to stop by since we were there.

One of my favorite lines is Ghastlies by Alexander Henry. He is coming out with a few new prints this year. I was pleased to see this cute little frame with the hammer girl.

I really like these frames and I will be keeping my eye out for some for the store.

I charged up my camera battery before I left but got 2 photos taken before it said dead battery. All the pictures I was able to take after that were on my iphone. Thank goodness for my phone. How did I live without it?

I was crediting the store with my twitter pics but I didn't with these ones. Shoot. I am going to be sharing our adventures and favorite finds throughout the week so stay tuned.

Also, I will be announcing a chance to win a $100 gift card to Quilt Barn. It can be used in our store, our etsy store or our webstore.

4th of July Ticker Tape Quilt

When we were discussing our new windows Amy knew right away what we should make for the bed window, a ticker tape quilt.

She used 1.5 jelly rolls fo Stars and Stripes by Riley Blake. Amy used the long arm to make this one but you could do it on your machine.
Here it is all washed up and crinkly lovely.

See the awesome stars backing she used? Almost sold out. That happens with every backing Amy chooses.
She made pillowcases with her next favorite fabric from that line. The red really pops. We have some swag bunting around here somewhere and I think it would be great as a bed skirt.

Fabric Friday Nightshade

When I saw peeks of Tula Pink's new line, Nightshae, I was impressed. Now that we have it in and I can see it in person I am in love with it. The detail is amazing.
Above is Absinthe.

Heather has started a quilt with this from Tula's new book. I can't wait to see it.
This is Vapor.

This is Evening.
There is a lovely sinister story about these three sisters to go along with this line. I am a huge Halloween fan and have more Halloween quilts than any other holiday. I need to find the perfect pattern so I can cut in to this fabric.

Do you have any ideas for me? Are you as excited as I am?

Check out my Road Trip post here for giveaway details

July Window

It was about time we changed out our windows. The last window (Vintage Kitchen) was a big hit but it was time to come up with something new.
Since our windows stay up a few months we thought a July 4th theme was in order.

With no clear idea in mind I pulled fun red, white, and blue items from my and Quilt Barn's stash.
Jenele had lanterns left over from her daughter's wedding, I found a small picnic table in the Quilt Barn's basement and off we went with a BBQ/Picnic theme.

BBQ's need condiments.

A cute vintage bike with a large basket and a red and white quilt spilling out.
Its hard to take pictures inthis window so you are just going to have to stop by and take a peek. Let us know what you think.
Our other window with the iron bed is next. Amy and I are making a making a few fun things for the bed so stay tuned for that transformation.

My name is Tara and I love to decorate our windows. A huge perk of the job!
