Day 4
Today we will attach our side panels. Your 2 side panels should have pins in them from Day 1. One at a time, fold the side panel at each pin with the inside lining on the inside of the fold. Press a crease at each pin mark. Starting with the center crease, fold your side panel around the center pocket as shown:
Line up the unfinished bottom of your side panel with the stitching line at the bottom of the center zipper pocket.
Starting at the bottom (stitched line), sew up the side panel toward the zipper. Backstitch at the top!
It will look like this:
Repeat for each zipper pocket, lining the edge up with the crease lines.
When you sew these sides, you will have to be careful to make sure you're project is positioned so that you don't sew something that shouldn't be sewn!
Repeat, stitching each side panel to the pocket from bottom to top.
Your first side should look like this:
Now, lay your project flat as shown:
Fold each zipper pocket upward at an angle as shown, to help your project lie flat and keep it out of the way while you sew the sides to the lining.
Pin the side panel to the lining as shown:
Stitch down the side panel with a scant 1/4" seam allowance.
Repeat for the other side.
Here is where we stop for today! Good job everyone! I love seeing your progress on Flickr, Instagram, and enjoy reading your comments on the blog! I want to send an extra thanks out to Michelle @sewdemented for graciously allowing me to publish this sewalong to go with her amazing pattern. Also, a big thanks to Jennie @kungfucowgirl (Zipit Zippers) for the discount - who doesn't love to save $$? Send them some IG love and thank them, too!
This is great to see it!! The pattern is fantastic and after the fact makes so much sense, but having a visual for the steps just makes it so much easier!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this sew along!!
ReplyDeleteI totally would have missed the last step and been confused without this guidance!!! Thanks so, so much for this sew-along!! There isn't anything in the pattern about it, and this is my first time using a pattern, zippers, and interfacing . . . the whole shebang :-) Thanks again!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am a little behind on the Sew Together Bag. I've wanted to make for some time but other things.....blah....blah. lol I am sooooo very appreciative of your Sew Along! Especially the part and pictures of how to fold the zippers out of the way to attach the side panel. Those pics (and many more) in my opinion should have been included in the original pattern. Those of us who are visual learners would have benefited greatly had they been included since they are such an intricate part of the process. I am very happy that I found your wonderful instructions and photos and am glad to say that I am well on my way to a finish. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteWhen you sewed the side panels down to the bottom, how did you treat the seam from each pouch? Did you push it to one side or the other and sew over it or did you try to flatten it out and then sewed over it? I hope that makes sense!
ReplyDeleteJackie, in my class we used a hammer, yes a hammer, to pound down the fabric to make it thinner to sew across. It worked wonders!
ReplyDeleteI am doing the sew together now 10 months later.... This is much better explained!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this sew a long. I would not have finished it just by reading the pattern.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this visual step by step. Such a great way to follow the original pattern. I enjoy to much sewing my own creation of this amazing bag. uploading my pictures of progress and final result on instagram and #sewtogethersewalong ;)
ReplyDeleteWhen stitching the pockets to the lining (more than once), I ended up with one little pleat or tuck at the bottom of each pocket (while trying to squish them out of the way I guess). So they were in one direction on one side and the other direction on the other side (because of keeping the bag on the left while sewing) so the interior was slightly twisted and didn't lay square with the exterior any more. Did anyone else have that problem or have a remedy? I do love this tutorial and was glad to have it to follow along with making this bag. I will make more of these!
ReplyDeleteI know this is 3 months after you ask this question Donna, but for anyone who is just doing this and wondering the same thing as you, if you look carefully at the pictures where she sews them down you see she has all the seams going the same direction. I have done one myself and it is very tricky to get them to lay flat. I love the comment above that said to use a hammer to flatten them down first. I am going to try that next time.
DeleteI love working 'with' you (I know I am nearly a year behind...), thanks for your tons of pictures :)
ReplyDeleteI have been working on this pattern for 2 days, I find the instructions very poorly explained. Thank you for the tutorial, It really has made a difference to see it made visually. I lost my pattern for the side lining. Is there anyway that someone can give me the measurements for marking the folds, please.
ReplyDeleteGostei muito desse novo modelo de porta lápis .
ReplyDeleteThank you for saving my sanity! I have been trying to understand the directions for weeks (I wish I had found your sew along directions sooner) and put it away several times in frustration. Thank you sooooo much!
ReplyDeleteThe side panels are a problem for me. I can't seem to get the seam allowance right, so that there are no puckers when sewing the side panel to the body. I've tried the hammer on the seams to make them lay better, and they still end up not so nice. Any hints, tips, suggestions appreciated. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHermoso trabajo y que colores.. muy útil, gracias por enseñarnos!!
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI would like to make this pocket but the part 5 is no longer accessible.
Can you update the link please ?
Thank you very much
The link seems to be working now. Are you still having trouble accessing Part 5?
DeleteMe gusta mucho
ReplyDeleteHi Heather recently I bought the pattern in our Needleworks craft shop. As a long time sewer and without you it may have ended in the rubbish. I am so glad I found you. Kudos to the lady who made the pattern but without the visual you have provide even I would have found it as scratch head tutorial,as many of the sewers here have said. Thanks to you I now know i will be able to do this if I do it again. There are some wonderful examples in the Flicker so I am sure that is due to your great visuals many more people were able to do it. I am so glad I found you so thank you for all your trouble. xx
ReplyDeleteI wish that I could get the measurement for this bag
ReplyDeleteThank goodness I found your sew along tutorial! I have sewn for many many years no I did not find the pattern helpful at all. I had to recut the outside piece. The measurement in the pattern is WAY off. Thank you so much for doing this tutorial.
